Why is the transition from school to university difficult?

Transition of first years students into the university can be difficult for some students as they are required to adapt into a new environment and learning styles that is different from what they have learned during their previous years in school. For an example, transition from high school to university or college.

"SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS"

Are you a student who wants to be successful? All people can be good successful students, if they try hard and use self discipline to push them self harder. Being a successful student doesn't mean you are so smart to skip grades, it just mean that you get good marks, work well with others, and don't get held back any grades. If you are person who wants to keep your life on track, it takes hard work, determination and patience.

Being a successful student may involve some of the characteristics such as: organization, time, studying and believing you can achieve.

Characteristics of successful students:

  • Accept responsibility. You see yourself as primarily responsible for your outcomes and experience.
  • Self-motivated. You find purpose on what you do by discovering personally meaningful goals and dreams.
  • Master self-management. You plan and take action in pursuit of your goals and dreams.
  • Interdependent. You build mutually supportive relationships that help you achieve your goals and dreams (while helping others do the same).
  • Self-awareness. You consciously think, believe and behave in ways that keep you on your course.
  • Believe in life-long learning. You look for lessons in all your experiences.
  • Have high EQ's (Emotional intelligence). You accept your emotions but you manage them in support of your goals and dreams.
  • Believe in yourself. You see yourself as a capable, lovable and unconditionally worthy human being.

Let's discuss ways that you can become more successful

8 WAYS TO BE A SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS:

  8. Respect the teacher. Don't talk while teacher is talking or be disruptive during class.

What is learning???

Learning is a process that leads to change, which occurs as a result of experience and increases the potential of improved performance and future learning.

-How Learning Works: Seven Research-Based Principles for Smart Teaching by Susan Ambrose,et al.

Learning Styles...

Learning styles refer to a range of competing and contested theories that aim to account for differences in individuals' learning. The many theories share the proposition that humans can be classified according to their 'style' of learning, but different in how the proposed styles should be defined, categorized and assessed. A common concept is that individuals differ in how they learn.

Visual Learners

Someone with a preference for visual learning is partial to seeing and observing things, including pictures, diagrams, written directions and more. This is also referred to as the “spatial” learning style. Students who learn through sight understand information better when it’s presented in a visual way. These are your doodling students, your list makers and your students who take notes.

Learning suggestions:
  • Draw or outline the information you need to remember
  • Copy what is on the board
  • Diagram sentences
  • Take notes and make lists
  • Color code, highlight, circle and underline words in your notes
  • Use flashcards
Auditory Learners

Auditory learners tend to learn better when the subject matter is reinforced by sound. These students would much rather listen to a lecture than read written notes, and they often use their own voices to reinforce new concepts and ideas. These types of learners prefer reading out loud to themselves. They aren’t afraid to speak up in class and are great at verbally explaining things. Additionally, they may be slower at reading and may often repeat things a teacher tells them.

Learning suggestions:
  • Add rhythm or music as a learning aid
  • Recite key points aloud
  • Participate in group discussions
  • Record your classes
  • Teach others what you want to learn

Kinesthetic Learners

Kinesthetic learners, sometimes called tactile learners, learn through experiencing or doing things. They like to get involved by acting out events or using their hands to touch and handle in order to understand concepts. These types of learners might struggle to sit still and often excel at sports or like to dance. They may need to take more frequent breaks when studying.

Learning suggestions:
  • Learn by teaching the material to others
  • Need to try it themselves to learn how to do it
  • Learn by acting out and role playing
  • Need real world examples
  • Word association
  • Need to move their bodies to learn something
  • Encourage to explore outside the classroom
So that was a topic I learned in the first week... I hope you all can understand about learning skills so you can improve your learning skills to learn more effectively and easy. You can also learn more about learning skills through this video.

In addition, you can also identify what learning styles are you by try the quiz in this video

So, what is your learning styles?
